Are there different types of dentures?

Yes. There are generally two different types:

  • Full or complete dentures – Replace all of the teeth in the lower or upper jaw
  • Partial dentures – Are designed to fill gaps by replacing a few lost teeth.

Dentures rest on the gums and are fabricated to fit the contours of the mouth. Depending on your needs, you may get an upper denture, lower denture, or both upper and lower dentures. Partial dentures fill empty spaces when some teeth are missing. They typically attach to remaining, healthy teeth with special clasps.

Are full or partial dentures right for me?

Drs. DeVaney or Rodriguez cannot answer this question with certainty until after an appointment is scheduled at our office. During your appointment, they examine the condition of any remaining teeth that may be present, as well as the health of your gums and jawbone. No consultation would be complete without reviewing your medical history/overall health. We’ll also discuss your goals, preferences, personal habits, lifestyle, and other factors we must consider when determining the most appropriate treatment recommendations.

In general, good candidates for full dentures have few, if any, healthy teeth left. “Partials” may be an option for patients with some healthy teeth, because the denture relies on the remaining teeth for support. Additionally, Dr. Rodriguez specializes in implant-retained dentures, which can offer greater stability and comfort for qualified patients. This innovative solution may be an excellent option to discuss during your consultation.

What is the process like for dentures?

After an initial examination and conversation, we will take impressions or digital scans of your mouth. We also measure things like your bite, or how the upper and lower teeth or gums come in contact with each other when you close your mouth. If needed, we will extract heavily damaged teeth. We generally fit temporary dentures as your mouth heals after extractions. We also provide a “trial version” of the denture during the process. Think of this mock-up as a way to test drive your smile and bite. We note even the slightest changes in characteristics like a tooth’s shade or position. We account for these changes in the final version of your denture. We’ll also provide you with instructions for wear and care.

What is “normal” during the adjustment period?

Know that you will always have support and are welcome to contact us at any time with questions or concerns. For many patients, dentures may feel a bit unfamiliar or bulky at first. There may also be sore spots and irritation. We can advise on tips to “retrain” your mouth to eat and speak with dentures. For instance, patients find it helpful to cut their food into smaller pieces. Start with more forgiving foods like steamed veggies and work your way up to chewier options as your confidence grows. As needed, our dentists can adjust your dentures for comfort if issues persist.
